Maria Costanza of New England Meets The Maria Costanza Wines in Sicily

Maria Costanza_Ron's Food Trips

Welcome to Sicily!

Have you ever Googled your name?

Two years ago, I googled my name “Maria Costanza”, and the results were images of the Maria Costanza Sicilian wines.

Eager to own one, I researched if it’s available in or around Connecticut. Unfortunately no, but I was determined to have one. Since I haven’t been to Sicily, it was the perfect opportunity (or excuse) to go to Sicily and physically get the wine as a birthday present to myself. So that’s what I did, I planned the entire birthday trip around this wine.

The Maria Costanza wines

April 2017 – A week before my birthday trip to Italy and Germany, I accidentally dropped a bottle of olive oil on my big toe. It was so painful that I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs. The bottle didn’t break, but my toe… hmm… black and blue and hurt like you would not believe.

As I headed to the register, trying to walk as normal as possible in my 5 inches heels, it occurred to me that going on vacation now was bad timing.  With all the uncertainty happening at work, house hunting, and accidentally dropping a bottle of olive oil were probably signs that I should postpone this trip.

I’m glad I ignored all the distractions. It turned out to be a birthday celebration of a lifetime. It brings tears to my eyes reminiscing about the wonderful events, spectacular sceneries, delicious foods and amazing people I met along the way. Friendship rekindled and new friendships developed in as short as 2 weeks.

Azienda Agricola G. Milazzo is the producer of the award-winning Maria Costanza wines. Because their vineyard is not open to the public, I reached out to inquire if I could visit their winery. I shared my “googling” story, and how I was planning my birthday trip around it. My enthusiasm heightened when they agreed on accommodating my request. “Woo-hoo! I’m going to Sicily on my birthday.” I was ecstatic and couldn’t wait to get on that plane.

Mascalucia Sicily – I stayed at this ancient winery that was beautifully and conservatively restored to a luxury, rustic and uniquely Sicilian villa accommodation.

Beautiful accommodation in Mascalucia

From Mascalucia to the Azienda Agricola G. Milazzo in Campobello di Licata was about two-hours of picturesque driving. Cruising along sunny highways in my Fiat rental, I was mesmerized by the ever-changing views and abundance of Sicily’s natural beauty.

The majestic Mt. Etna in the background, rolling hills landscape, medieval architectures, rock formations, lush countryside, the valleys, the villas and wineries, all painted an unimaginable beauty that would surely deepen my Sicilian admiration.

Warmly greeted by beautiful Luisa (I adore her name); I couldn’t help to express my excitement for this exclusive “vine to wine” behind-the scenes tour, an intimate opportunity to witness how the Maria Costanza wines are produced, cellared, stored and bottled.

This rose smells lovely.

Standing in disbelief, the tour began with the introduction of the variety of grapes used for the Maria Costanza wines; Inzolia, Chardonnay biotypes and Nero d’ Avola.

The major keys why Milazzo produces the best and award-winning wines; 1. the abundance of Mediterranean sunlight, 2. high temperatures, 3. low rainfall, and 4. organic farming.

The Tasting Room

The MOST anticipated part of the tour, and the reason why I went to Sicily.

Take note, I’m not by any mean a wine connoisseur. I cannot describe the undertones of aroma or the detectable qualities and flavors there might be. All I know is; pour, swirl, cheers, inhale, drink and repeat.

So, how do I describe wines?

If it’s a thumbs up, it would be; “Wow, this is delicious!”, “Oh, I love this!”, “OMG! This smells fantastic!”, “Where can I get this?”, and “Please, I want more, and don’t be stingy.”

Thumbs down would be, “Lovely for sangria.”

Luisa set-up the table for the tasting event. She brought in some bread and different types of wine glasses, and 3 beautiful bottle of wines; Riserva V38AG Metodo Classico Brut di Milazzo, Maria Costanza Bianco IGT Sicilia, and Maria Costanza Rosso.

Riserva V38AG Metodo Classico Brut di Milazzo

I love everything about this Brut sparkling wine. From its elegant packaging to the lingering bright flavors that made me crave for more. Definitely, a THUMBS UP!!!

Riserva V38AG Metodo Classico Brut di Milazzo

Milazzo Riserva V38AG is the special reserve created to tell our terroir and our passionate work. A bright sparkling wine with intense yellow color, accompanied by a very persistent perlage. It empties scents of exotic fruit that blend in the crust of bread. Silky, soft and particularly elegant on the palate.

This cuvée was born that would be the result of the clever fusion of special clones of Inzolia and Chardonnay, specially cultivated and selected to handle a long stay on yeasts waiting for a special anniversary celebrated as the 40 years since First draw. “ Read more… Milazzo Vini, Riserva V38AG Metodo Classico Brut di Milazzo

Maria Costanza Bianco Sicilia

Holy moly! This is seriously delicious. I remember the notable lush aroma of fresh bouquet and fruits. The smoothness and luxurious mouth feel that will leave your mouth watering to the last drop. Oh yeah! Definitely a THUMBS UP!

Maria Costanza Bianco Sicilia

The Maria Costanza White represents a milestone in the history of Sicilian viticulture. Our winery was infact the first to create the blend of Inzolia and Chardonnay which gave life to this so elegant white wine.

Pale straw yellow colour with green highlights. To the nose is very delicate with hints of vanilla, enriched by tropical white and yellow fresh fruits. It closes with pleasant hints of chamomile in bloom. To the mouth is rich, structured and of great softness. Sapid, well-integrated, long and very persistent.

Maria Costanza Rosso Sicilia

I never had a “BLACK D’AVOLA” red wine, so I didn’t know what to expect. Luisa opened the bottle and gave it a chance to breath for 15 minutes or so. What I learned from sommeliers (wine steward), aeration allows the wine’s aromas and flavors to warm up with the surrounding air to intensify all its beautiful characteristics.

First sip, I was slightly disjointed. It’s definitely not a Cabernet which I’m used to drinking. But it has these lively and smooth lingering flavors that I couldn’t define (again, I’m not an expert). I took a bigger sip, played with it a little bit in my mouth. Hmm… black licorice, carob and silky tannins were notable. Overall, I freaking LOVE this wine! Double thumbs up!!!

Maria Costanza Rosso Sicilia

“Maria Costanza Red Wine is the most intense expression of our way of interpreting the most well known Sicilian varietal, Nero D’Avola.

An impenetrable intense red colour. To the nose emerges a compelling spicy note of minerals and incense. After a few minutes in the glass it emanates an innate fruitiness of ripe cherry and morello. It closes evolving into jam. To the mouth is soft, velvety, warm and well structured. Powerful its richness in fine polyphenols, ripen and sweet. Round, mellow with a very tactile impact.”

What a view of the vineyard from the tasting room.

Thank you Ms. Luisa and Azienda Agricola G. Milazzo for your kind and heartfelt accommodation. I’ll never forget this one-of-a-kind experience; went behind the scenes, strolled around the vineyards and witnessed the production of your award-winning wines. I can’t wait to go back to Sicily for more. I look forward to enjoying your wines at least in New York someday.

It still amuses me how a simple googling of my name led me to an unforgettable journey to Sicily. Flying over 4,400 miles to get a hold of the Maria Costanza wine sounds crazy, right? Probably, but to me, the whole experience was priceless. Without any hesitation will do it again in a heartbeat.
PS. I didn’t drop any bottle during this tour and vacation.
